Scott Hollingworth from the Department of Local Government and Communities, spoke on behalf of Minister Tony Simpson in support of the twelve-month Beyond Gambling project which has received bipartisan support.
“While over 110,000 Australians are classified as ‘problem gamblers’ and a further 280,000 are considered to be a moderate risk, only 15% will seek help.” said Mr Hollingworth. “This is why the work to tackle problem gambling is so important.”
The project involved eight Linkwest neighbourhood centres and five delivery partners, working together to deliver 240 workshops targeted towards those either with, or indirectly affected by, problem gambling. Over 1500 people attended these events – a fantastic result, especially given the veil of secrecy that surrounds this growing issue.
